Members of UNO's chapter of the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity bounced on a trampoline for 48 consecutive hours from midnight on Oct. 5 to midnight on Oct. 7 to raise money for the North American Food Drive. The members even bounced through the night, switching out in four-hour shifts.

Fifteen active fraternity members participated, as well as 11 new recruits and members of the Alpha Xi Delta sorority.

The Bounce-A-Thon happened in the Pep Bowl, next to the fraternity's Homecoming float. It was sponsored by Monster energy drink. Donors received a can of Monster for their contributions.

"It draws more attention since we have our camper and our huge pirate ship float," said Patrick McNary, 21, Lambda Chi Alpha's social chair and public relations coordinator. "We bounce to raise money and awareness [of hunger in our area]."

The food drive is a national effort carried out by Lambda Chi Alpha chapters to raise food and monetary donations for local communities, according to the national Lambda Chi Alpha Web site.

In 2008, the nation's Lambda Chi Alpha chapters collectively gathered 415,000 pounds of food for needy families. UNO's chapter alone raised 24, 849 pounds through on-campus donations and a partnership with the Mid-America Council, Boy Scouts of America. So far this year, the chapter has raised $425, and will continue collecting at Saturday's football game.

This year is UNO's seventh year participating in the North American Food Drive.

"I had fun, Bounce-A-Thon is always fun," said Kevin Peatrowsky, 20, a Lambda Chi Alpha member. "My favorite thing to do is when people walk by the table, I'll tell them if they donate $5, I'll get one of the guys to do a back flip. That worked pretty well."

Many passersby wanted to jump on the trampoline, Peatrowsky said, but for liability reasons, only Lambda Chi Alpha and Alpha Xi Delta members were allowed to jump.

"However, everybody I asked to donate said they were glad we were doing it for this good cause," Peatrowsky said. "Even the people who couldn't donate said they were so happy to see us doing this."
