UNO Showcase Opens 40th Season of Volleyball at UNO

The Volleyball team, entering its 40th season at Nebraska-Omaha, will begin its season with the first-ever UNO Volleyball Showcase, held Friday and Saturday at Sapp Fieldhouse. Nine teams will be participating in 18 matches over the opening weekend on two different courts.

The Mavs kick off the event against Tarleton State on Friday with the match beginning at 10 a.m. They will also host the day's final match against Abilene Christian with a start time of 7 p.m.

Saturday's contests include a match against Dallas Baptist at 11:45 a.m. and an evening game with North Alabama beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Three New Opponents to Play UNO

Among the four teams the Mavs are scheduled to play in the UNO Volleyball Showcase, three of them have never faced UNO before. Tarleton State, Abilene Christian and Dallas Baptist will be traveling to Sapp Fieldhouse for the first time.

North Alabama has played the Mavs twice, with each team winning once.

The other teams in the tournament that are not scheduled to play UNO are Emporia State and Truman from the MIAA, Eastern New Mexico and Minnesota State.

Shires only 13 wins away from 400

Volleyball Head Coach Rose Shires enters the 2009 season only 13 wins away from reaching 400 for her career. Her career record is 387-215 and every game has been with UNO. Shires is already number one in total wins at UNO and second with a .643 winning percentage.

Shires led UNO to a national championship in 1996 and has three conference titles and 10 trips to the NCAA II Tournament.

Thommes is 113 kills from 1,000

Senior middle blocker Ellen Thommes begins her senior season just 113 kills away from reaching 1,000 for her career. If Thommes does reach 1,000 she would become UNO's 17th player all-time to accomplish the feat. Last year, Thommes led the team with 353 kills and has 887 in her career.

Thommes is also two block assists away from jumping into UNO's career top-10 list, registering 289 in her career so far.

The last player to register 1,000 kills for her UNO career was Carlie Christensen, who played from 2004-07 and scored 1,214 kills.

Top 10 Looms for Jansen in Career Digs

Senior libero Kayla Jansen is only 26 digs short of reaching UNO's career top 10. She begins her 2009 senior campaign with 1,191 digs in her career. Jansen led the Mavs with 505 digs last year, which was the seventh-highest single-season total in UNO history.

On tap for next week

After hosting the UNO Volleyball Showcase, the Mavs will travel to Lakeland, Fla., to play in the 2009 Florida Southern Classic from Sept. 4-5, hosted by Florida Southern College. On Friday the Mavs will take on the University of Minnesota Duluth at 1 p.m. CST and then play host Florida Southern College at 7 p.m CST. Saturday's contests include a match against Bemidji State at 11 a.m. CST and Grand Valley State with a 2 p.m. CST start time.
