by David Sedaris
This year, David Sedaris came out with another wonderful book, which weaves wit and humor in his personal narrative essays. "When You Are Engulfed in Flames" is a compilation of radio essays he performed on National Public Radio's "This American Life" using the descriptive style shown on every page. Sedaris, who's considered to be one of the best humorists of our time, used dialogue that will have you laughing out loud throughout the whole book. It's perfect for the student who is weary after finals and needs a pick-me-up book.
"The New York Times: The Complete Front Pages 1851-2008"
Think looking through archives of old newspapers is a drag? Opening a history book bore you? This collection will have you reconsidering that perspective with this visually exciting book of selected New York Times front pages from over 157 years. Some of the most noteworthy include Martin Luther King, Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech, Abraham Lincoln's assassination and the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. This compilation makes for an unusual, but engaging coffee table book. It also comes with three DVDs that contain all of the front pages, so you can easily pull them up on your computer. This is a wonderful gift for avid readers, future journalists and history buffs.
"A Most Wanted Man" by John le Carré
The author behind "The Constant Gardener" and "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy" writes a new fiction book about international intelligence, spying and military. No, this is not another tale about George Smiley, one of Carré's trademark characters. Instead, the English author wrote a thriller about Issa, a character who deals with a series of questionable actions and reactions. "A Most Wanted Man" certainly captures the essence of post-Sept. 11 war and terror. For those fans of author James Patterson or those who are looking for a suspenseful book with an international focus, this is the pick for you.
