It seems like everybody is exposed to blogs, whether it's their own on Blogger.com, their friends' on MySpace.com or a Middle Eastern blog like BeirutSpring.com on a CNN news report.

Still, the AP Stylebook warns us to remind readers that a blog is a "Web log," essentially an online journal.

Blogs have become a cornerstone of much of the discussions had on the Internet. Where once Usenet bulletin boards and listservs were king, blogs are created by anyone from the most powerful companies (say, googleblog.blogspot.com) to any random 14-year-old (whose parents give him or her permission, of course).

Even University Affairs has created a blog, maverickland.blogspot.com, to replace its old "UNO What's Up" publication - which, if you don't remember, was a weekly online newsletter like eNotes, unomaha.edu/enotes.php, geared towards students.

University Affairs Director Tim Kaldahl, who created the blog, said in his inaugural post back in January, "Instead of a traditional newsletter format, the hope here is to create something with lots of links, lots of interactivity and (hopefully) lots of interaction with students. Will it work? The better question, I think, is what does it hurt to try?"

We whole-heartedly agree with Kaldahl, who is a former Gateway columnist, by the way.

So in that spirit, the Gateway would like to announce our first serious experiment with blogging, the Daily Gateway, accessible at blogs.unomaha.edu.

Through this blog, we plan to bring fresh, student-produced content to campus on a daily basis this semester on the following schedule:

Monday - A schedule of events happening on campus that week, courtesy of our news team.

Tuesday - A overview of movies, DVDs, CDs, books and video games released that week, courtesy of our arts & entertainment staff.

Wednesday - A profile of a student service on or near campus, courtesy of our features writers.

Thursday - A summary of what to look forward to in Maverick athletics that week, courtesy of our sports department.

Friday - A photo gallery of what happened that week, courtesy of our photographers.

In addition to these regular updates, we will try to regularly print breaking news, commentary pieces and anything else we think will be valuable to fellow students.

Down the road, we hope to add audio and video elements to our Web site as well as explore other possibilities in the world of New Media.

A blog is just our first step, as we dip our metaphorical toes in the deep ocean of media online, testing the waters.

So if blogging is something that interests you, we would ask that you please leave the occasional comment on the blog or e-mail suggestions and complaints to us at editor@unogateway.com

In the end, a blog is really only as successful as much as it fosters interaction and creates new opportunities to help people communicate. If our blog remains only a one-way street, it will be no more valuable to anyone than our current publication.
